They are a bit thicker than standard poster papers. It keeps the images and text readable. Glossy finish helps colors pop against one another and creates the illusion of depth in images that look a little flat. Generally cartoony or sports related posters look great in gloss.

Glossy images come in two primary intensity levels. High gloss and semi gloss. The less reflective semi gloss is perfect for places with intense lighting. A big benefit is that glossy and satin paper withstand handling better than other types of inkjet paper.

Semi gloss has the advantage of being appropriate for posters that are intended either for framing behind glass perspex or placed on a wall in a space where you prefer less reflectivity. Choose a more durable wide format poster paper roll if you plan to sell decorative photo or at prints that will be viewed up close for a number of years. The right paper option for your large format posters will depend on the lighting of your target location. If your poster is exploding with color or movement gloss is the way to go.

Gloss seems to also add definition to the borders of an image so images appear brighter and clearer. The semi gloss category falls in between a high gloss finish and a zero gloss finish matte.
